10 May Calgary Branch
Hello everyone
I hope you are enjoying the fall colours. The yellow and orange leaves make up a bit for the lack of sunshine. The glow comes from the trees and ground, rather than the sky. However, the weather is supposed to get better on Sept 23 and so I am still hopeful that we will have our glorious warm and sunny fall days (especially since I still have many things to do outside!).
I’m Christine Wuerscher (aka Selbstaedt) and I’m responsible for getting the word out about any anthroposophical goings-on in Calgary. If you have a relevant event of which I am not aware, or if you have questions or concerns, email me at asccb@shaw.ca.
Here are events which are happening in Calgary in the near future:
Thursday Sept. 27, 2018: STUDY GROUP
Our study group meets this Thursday with the book study beginning at 8 pm and socializing starting at 7:30 pm. We are continuing our study of Christianity as Mystical Fact. We are in the middle of Chapter 5: The Wisdom of the Mysteries and the Myth. All are welcome! Don’t feel that you have to come to all the study groups just because we’re studying a book. There are riches to be gleaned each evening so come as you can. And there are nice people to talk to, before and after, and occasional yummy munchies too. Email asccb@shaw.ca if you need directions. You can mark your calendars for the second and fourth Thursday of each month and then email me to find out the location since we rotate hosting responsibilities. This Thursday, Sept. 27th, we will be meeting at 145 Sierra Morena Green SW in Calgary.
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, 7 pm: MICHAELMAS CELEBRATION
We will have a devotional gathering with readings and discussion, songs, and prayers on the theme of Matthew 22:1-14. It is an opportunity to pause and ponder the significance of St. Michael for our time and place. If you like to sing, come at 6:45 pm to rehearse the songs prior to the beginning of the celebration. The gathering will take place at 2402 Carleton St SW in Calgary.
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, 8 pm: GRAND OPENING OF TALC
What is TALC, you ask? It is a temporary acronym which stands for Tiny Anthroposophical Library of Calgary. We will officially open the library of around 200 books which is housed at 2402 Carleton St SW. These books have come to our branch as a gift from the library of the Anthroposophical Society of Canada and a few generous donors who want to share their books. However, the library is actually much bigger because it has satellites; a number of friends here in Calgary are making their own libraries available for use through this little library. If you come to Calgary, contact me at asccb@shaw.ca if you are looking to borrow a certain book. In the meantime, come for the cutting (ribbon), the browsing (books), the toasting (beverage), the grazing (food) and the mingling (friends, old and new). AND you have the once in a lifetime opportunity to have input into the name of this “little library that can” inspire focussed thinking, mindful feeling and heartled action! Come with your great ideas:)
EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST
If you would like to be emailed about upcoming study groups (and venues) and other events, contact me at asccb@shaw.ca and I will “put you on the list, to make sure you won’t be missed.”
CARRYING GROUP
A small group of people meets about every month or so during the school year to attempt to discern what type of event is needed at this time in this place. We are currently in flux with regard to the members of this group. If you would like to participate in this way, please let me know at asccb@shaw.ca and I can tell you more.
ANTHROPOSOPHY IN THE MEDIA
A message on The Calgary Waldorf School (calgarywaldorf.org) website alerted me to an interesting interview of Calgary-born Douglas Cardinal on the CBC radio website. Mr Cardinal, an internationally acclaimed and renowned architect (he is currently exhibiting at the Venice Bienniele), was influenced by Rudolf Steiner in his architecture and in his thoughts on education. He was interviewed on Calgary CBC Radio’s Homestretch programme on January 25, 2018 and you can listen to what he has to say about Waldorf education by clicking on the link here: http://www.cbc.ca/listen/shows/the-homestretch/segment/15506272. I had a chance to meet him at the Canadian Anthroposophical Conference in Ottawa in 2016 and learned about his Foundation for Indigenous Waldorf Education. You can check it out at indigenouswaldorf.ca
