27 Feb Migration – A Grail Journey of Our Time
During the twelve Holy Nights, December 25th – January 6th, Regine Kurek’s art show Migration – A Grail Journey of Our Time was displayed in the Community Room at Hesperus Fellowship Village. “I would like to share with you a series of paintings that have arisen out of being touched by the current Refugee Crisis and the notion that we don’t feel comfortable with the un-familiar, such as ‘foreigners’. It really hit home for me when this ‘migration’ arrived in Canada this past year and I saw photographs of men, women and children crossing the plains of ice and snow across the 49th parallel into Canada. Being an immigrant myself, the notion of being or not being welcome in the country of choice for whatever the reason, was deeply disturbing. Also, it touched a deep cord in me to read that currently over 65 million people are seeking refuge and that 10 years ago there were three and now there are 11 walls in the world hindering people from crossing borders and keeping people out of ‘my country’! This phenomenon to leave home in search of a better future, may be even death, is deeply disturbing and yet points to such courage and trust in one’s destiny! Everything is in movement across the world, can we embrace this shift and meet the uncertainty in the present time with ‘absolute equanimity’ and creativity? The question of ‘what can I do as an artist’ has moved me from hope to despair and back to HOPE: At the moment my HOPE is that being a witness in this form, moves some HEARTS.”
